But really, though, come on: are you surprised that the old white dude reads a bunch of books by old white dudes? Call me back when, like, Zadie Smith is all like, "Ladies are crazy, old white dudes are where it's at." Then we'll talk about, you know, things we can talk about.

Yeah, I totally got all bitchface about the whiteness and maleness of the books in comments on that, but you're right, it's not exactly surprising.

It's just that I'd think that grown ups would understand that listing excuses beforehand doesn't cut it, it's not hard to broaden your reading tastes. It's not like the bookstore or library was out of everything but Ian McEwan the day he went.
